About Illinois Science Council Associates Board
Illinois Science Council (“ISC”) is an independent, volunteer-driven 501c3 organization that engages, educates, and entertains the adult public about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Our mission is summed up as a response to Carl Sagan’s observation: “We live in a society that is exquisitely dependent upon science and technology in which no know understands anything about science and technology.” That statement, made over 40 years ago, is more relevant than ever, yet neither the State of Illinois nor City of Chicago devote any resources to science outreach despite dedicating over $35 Million to arts and culture outreach. Although over 85% of the population is adults, science education and outreach funding from corporate and foundation resources is almost exclusively dedicated to students. ISC serves as the adult complement to the many science-outreach organizations focused on K-12 students, and the science complement to Chicago’s many arts and humanities organizations.
ISC creates public programs that bring scientists together with adults to cultivate their innate curiosity about STEM topics. Our brain/neuroscience programs have included: Your Brain on… Happiness, on Creativity, and on Love, Sex and Oxytocin. Our chemistry programs include Chemistry of… Beer, Chocolate, Coffee, Whiskey, Honey, Bread, and more. Our fundraising events include Science Cocktail Party (at which neuroscience and psychology students conduct experiments) and the annual Pi Day “Pi K” 3.14-mile fun run on March 14. ISC launched the Chicago Science Festival in 2015 to showcase area science institutions and researchers on a variety of topics. Our 5th Science Fest was in May 2019. We have upcoming talks on Urban Wildlife (8/6), taste-testing “miracle berries” (8/21), and on viruses – “Flu Shots & Drink Shots” in a bar (9/25).
We showcase the scientists and research of Chicago-area institutions and companies that make Chicago our nation’s true “City of Science.” We offer unique public outreach programming and also promote those done by other area institutions and organizations. Together, these efforts help to raise public awareness and understanding of science topics, and of the extraordinary amount of science research done in this region.
