About Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble
Founded in 2001, Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble challenges, engages and inspires audiences onstage and in the classroom, through innovative storytelling in the genre of Tanztheatre, “which unites all art media to achieve an all-embracing, radical change in humankind.” We collaboratively create thought-provoking performances and educational outreach programs incorporating theatre, music, movement, visual arts and literary text.
CDE is an award winning MacArthur recipient for International Collaborations and is often highlighted on top lists of performances to see with our stand out multidisciplinary performances. Our Performances combine dance, theatre and visual art to tell stories that address social issues. Our focus spans cultures and races, looking at social organization, civic participation, political climate, personal struggles, and everyday realities. We partner with multidisciplinary artists in Chicagoland and internationally.
CDE’s annual performance program reaches roughly 1,000 audience members, with an emphasis on partnership with Chicagoland organizations and works with over 50 artists and organizations each year.
Our Arts Education program reaches nearly 5,000 students annually in neighborhoods throughout Chicago. Approximately 95% of CDE’s dance, theatre and visual arts students are low-income, at-risk children and youth. CDE teaches social-emotional skills and boosts literacy. We also provide classical performance arts training in theater and dance. Mainstage Productions: four mainstage productions annually.
CDE is Chicago’s only multidisciplinary arts organization that creates professional work for the stage and has an equally robust arts education program.
